RS Foster Grandparent Program
The sense of purpose and having an active, positive role in shaping the youth of the community is invaluable.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Desire to work with at risk youth and kids with special & exceptional needs
Be 55 years of age or older
Pass a background check and physical exam
Meet federal income guidelines
Be able to work between 15-40 hours weekly
The Reconciliation Services Foster Grandparent Program connects low-income volunteers age 55 and over with opportunities to provide one-on-one mentoring, tutoring, and support to children with special and exceptional needs, or who are at an academic, social or financial disadvantage. They are there to help the kids of our community in a caring and consistent way, but they are also improving their own well being.
We partner with CNCS (Corporation for National and Community Service) and their Senior Corps program, which enables seniors across America to use their time and talents to give back to their communities. The RS Foster Grandparent Program serves Jackson, Clay and Platte Counties. We are in 30 civic institutions, including schools, early childhood centers, hospitals, and Family Court. Whether RS Foster Grandparents are helping with school readiness, emotional support, tutoring, or offering other physical and educational support, they are first and foremost a caring adult role model committed to seeing young people thrive and succeed.
Foster Grandparents are provided with a pre-tax stipend, reimbursement for travel expenses to their volunteer assignments, monthly training, recognition events, and the opportunity to improve their overall health through engaging in active and vibrant community life.
LEARN MORE ABOUT A FEW OF OUR RS FOSTER GRANDPARENTS:
Grandpa Jerry
I understand these kids, because I went through a lot of the same things they’re going through in school and at home. I know their tears because they were my tears. I can be there for them, listen to them and support them and laugh with them too.
Grandma Juanita
I love to do things for people, especially children. I don’t do it for recognition, I do it because it makes me feel good. It makes me happy and I have a purpose. It takes only one child to change the world for the better!
Grandma Lilly
I came to RS and met the Director of the Foster Grandparents Program. I told her, “I’m real shy and nervous” but she was encouraging and said, “just give it a try.” I tried it, I loved it and I’ve been there ever since.
